Samuel L. Jackson is back in the Western saddle a decade after starring in Quentin Tarantino’s “The Hateful Eight.” This time, Jackson is joined by fellow cinema icon Pierce Brosnan for revenge thriller “The Unholy Trinity.” The duo play two different kinds of lawmen in the Western, directed by Richard Gray.
“The Unholy Trinity” is billed as a “tale of revenge, dark secrets, and buried treasures,” with the drama being set in 1870s Montana. The film begins moments before the execution of Isaac Broadway (Tim Daly), “as he gives his estranged son, Henry (Brandon Lessard), an impossible task: Murder the man who framed him for a crime he didn’t commit. Intent on fulfilling his promise, Henry travels to the remote town of Trinity, where an unexpected turn of events traps him in town and leaves him caught between Gabriel Dove (Brosnan), the town’s upstanding new sheriff, and a mysterious figure named St Christopher (Jackson).”
Veronica Ferres, Gianni Capaldi, Q’orianka Kilcher, Ethan Peck, Katrina Bowden, and David Arquette also star. The film was written by Lee Zachariah, with director Gray, Carter Boehm, Kellie Lessard Brooks, Jeanne Allgood Gaisford, Michele Gray, Colin Floom, and Cameron Lessard producing. “3:10 to Yuma” and “Scream” composer Marco Beltrami and Tristan Beltrami did the score.
In 2020, Jackson said during the SCAD Savannah Film Festival (via Entertainment Weekly) that he is still close with his fellow ensemble cast members from Tarantino’s “The Hateful Eight.” In fact, that was the best cast he’s worked with, the star said at the time. “The haters from ‘Hateful Eight,’ we have a chain where we still text each other every week to say where are you, what are you doing, or we’re commenting on the political situation,” Jackson said. “That’s the strongest cinematic connection I’ve ever had.”
Jackson co-starred alongside Walton Goggins, Kurt Russell, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Bruce Dern, Michael Madsen, Demián Bichir, and Tim Roth. “The Hateful Eight” was the sixth collaboration between Jackson and Tarantino after “Pulp Fiction,” “Jackie Brown,” “Kill Bill,” “Inglourious Basterds,” and “Django Unchained.”
“The Unholy Trinity” will be released Friday, June 13 in theaters from Roadside Attractions. Check out the trailer below.
