Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock has graced our screens as the vigilante Daredevil for 10 years now, and audiences have followed the character through multiple arcs, stages of life, and suits. Over the years (and the course of multiple series), Murdock has donned a number of Daredevil suits, from his OG homemade suit to his iconic bright red suit and even mustard yellow in his She-Hulk: Attorney At Law cameo. While Matt spent much of the first season of Daredevil: Born Again running from the Daredevil persona, the back half of the season saw Matt reclaiming his vigilante identity and suiting up. But newly revealed set pics for Season 2 of Daredevil: Born Again hint that upcoming episodes will feature Matt’s (literal) darkest suit yet… and may hint at Matt being in his darkest mental state.
Matt’s Suits Historically Reflect His Feelings
Matt’s Daredevil suit has always been a way of indicating his mental state. His messy, loosely defined relationship with vigilantism in Season 1 of the original Daredevil series was reflected in the loose ropes and rough structure of his all-black costume. Matt’s homemade suit was far less protective than later iterations, leading to more injuries and shedding a lot more blood, which alluded to Matt’s more vulnerable state as a newly established hero. But by the end of Season 1, Matt’s growing need for protection against Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio) led him to recruit Fisk’s own suit maker. The classic red suit, designed by Matt Gerald’s Melvin Potter, was bright red, bullet and knife-proof, and featured the character’s iconic Devil iconography: indicating that Murdock was finally ready to let the devil out.
The iconic red suit introduced in the original Daredevil series was used for 2 full seasons and is quite reminiscent of the suit seen in Daredevil: Born Again – but it’s not the only version we’ve seen Matt don over the years. Murdock’s mustard-and-ketchup red and yellow suit is iconic to his character. In fact, it was part of his original look in the original 1964 Daredevil comic run, based on his father, boxer Battlin’ Jack Murdock’s yellow and red boxing robes. It’s undoubtedly a little goofy look in love action, so fans were doubtful that we would ever see it until it appeared in the fun She-Hulk. Cox’s cameo in the Tatiana Maslany-led series saw the character finally donning the yellow and red suit, reflecting Murdock’s light-hearted state for the entirety of the relatively low-stakes episode.
Matt’s New Suit Is an Exciting New Look for Daredevil
Set photos have given fans a good idea of where Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 may lead. Some have included hints at Fisk himself getting into the ring, Matt going on the run with Deborah Ann Woll’s Karen Page, and Wilson Bethel’s Bullseye getting his own comic-accurate look. But the set photos that have possibly been the most coveted? A good look at Matt’s new suit.
Recent set photos have revealed a suit that is nearly entirely black, with patchy red details that indicate that the suit may be painted over, perhaps in an attempt to keep Murdock’s vigilante activities more stealthy. Also notable is the fact that the new suit features something fans have been pleading for since the original series began back in 2015 – his iconic red double D logo. The chestplate logo is a staple of Matt’s comic counterpart’s suits, but the live-action adaptation of the character had yet to earn his classic symbol… until now. So, what does the new suit mean for Matt’s character?
Matt’s Season 2 Suit Foreshadows His Darkest Arc Yet
Daredevil: Born Again was undeniably pretty bleak off the bat. The very first episode saw Matt losing his best friend and career (as well as arguably life) partner, Foggy Nelson (Elden Henson) in a shocking attack from Bullseye. The first season of the series followed Matt in a state of shock and depression at losing his best friend (though I personally am on the “we never saw a body” train), which led him to abandon vigilantism altogether for a year. Matt was ready to leave his Daredevil persona behind for good – that is, until nemesis Wilson Fisk began to use his newly-acquired mayoral status to attempt to eliminate all vigilantes. Season 1 ended with the shocking reveal that Vanessa Fisk (Ayelet Zurer) had sent Bullseye as a hitman to kill Foggy, who knew too much about their plans to utilize a Red Hook shipping port in a legal loophole for criminal activity. The revelation led Matt to decide to fully embrace the Devil in him once more.

Charlie Cox Knows What It Means To Be Fearless
After 20 years onscreen, Cox isn’t coasting. With Disney+’s ‘Daredevil: Born Again,’ he’s making vulnerability a superpower.
It’s safe to say that the ending of Season 1 has set Matt up for a pretty dark arc in Season 2, still grieving and forced to take down Fisk once and for all. But the greatest hint as to where Matt may be headed in Season 2 may just be in his suit, and where the suit has been seen before in the comics. The suit from the leaked photos is similar to the one Matt wore in the recent comic run, Daredevil: Cold Day in Hell. Both suits are modified, weathered versions of Matt’s most iconic suit, and the similarities between the comic run and Season 2 will likely extend beyond the suit.
Cold Day in Hell featured Murdock battling his way through a borderline dystopian society in which few heroes are still standing, creating a dark and bleak atmosphere in Murdock’s beloved neighborhood of Hell’s Kitchen. Fisk’s commitment to ending vigilantism once and for all could lead to the city becoming similarly hopeless, which sets things up for a Cold Day in Hell inspired storyline.
