Ypsomed Announces New U.S.-Based Manufacturing Site in North Carolina

Ypsomed announced a new manufacturing facility located in Holly Springs, North Carolina, and is planning to invest $250 million in its initial phase. The expansion aims to bring the company closer to its customers while also creating the ability to serve local markets directly. Ypsomed anticipates the new site will supply products for the U.S. market from the end of 2027 and onwards.1

In a press release, Ypsomed CEO Simon Michel said, “Establishing our new production site in the United States marks an important step in Ypsomed’s global growth strategy. We have deliberately chosen Holly Springs, a location at the heart of our industry, close to our customers. The cooperative approach of the local authorities, the excellent infrastructure, and the proximity to top-tier universities provide ideal conditions for our future growth. This environment will allow us to attract the skilled workforce we need and to further strengthen our position as a leading supplier of self-injection systems worldwide, while contributing to the security of supply for the U.S. healthcare market.”

Ypsomed’s expansion aims to bring the company closer to its U.S.-based costumers, but is also expected to expand the medical device company’s production capacity while also strengthening its global partnerships.1 In order to accelerate its expansion, Ypsomed is buying a building with 160,000 sq ft, and has an option for further expansion. The company initially expects the expansion to generate upwards of 100 new jobs and is planning on expanding the workforce to around 200 in the following years as workforce demands increase.1

Holly Springs is home to upwards of 650 life sciences operations, including every stage of the biopharmaceutical supply chain from research and product development to device manufacturing, fill/finish, and delivery.1 Located in North Carolina’s Research Triangle, Holly Springsbrings together research, talent and community to scale the industry and move ideas to market.1

“This announcement brings an expansion in the life science offerings in Holly Springs, diversifying the types of companies located here, said Town of Holly Springs mayor Sean Mayefskie. “Everyone knows about the global biotech leaders who call Holly Springs home, and Ypsomed will provide needed supplies to contribute to the creation of life-saving medications these companies will produce right here in Holly Springs.”

Back in June of this year, Ypsomed announced it was opening its first manufacturing site in Changzhou, China. Ypsomed focused on sustainability with site being certified to the internationally recognized LEED Platinum standard (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) for its environmentally conscious construction.1 Ypsomed invested nearly $190 million in the manufacturing site, while also securing an additional 320,000 square ft of land for future expansion.

“Opening our own factory in China is not just a strategic investment, it reflects our long-term commitment and confidence in the Chinese market. Local manufacturing enables us to respond more quickly to customer needs, reduce logistical risks, and deliver our products more efficiently and sustainably,” said Michel.
