What to Expect With LASIK
LASIK is short for Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis. It’s a refractive laser eye procedure that uses a femtosecond laser and an excimer laser to reshape your cornea and correct refractive errors. These include farsightedness, astigmatism, and nearsightedness.
LASIK is an outpatient procedure that takes less than an hour to perform. If you’re nervous, your LASIK surgeon at Eye Center of Texas will offer you a sedative.
Before LASIK begins, your LASIK surgeon will administer numbing eye drops to ensure you don’t feel any discomfort. After these numbing eye drops disperse over the surface of your eye, your LASIK surgeon will use a femtosecond laser to create a flap in the outer layer of your eye.
They then open the flap to reach your cornea. They will carefully reshape the cornea using an excimer laser and gently close the flap back over your eye. The flap will heal without stitches.
Most patients start noticing almost immediate visual improvements after LASIK. As the numbing eye drops start wearing off in the hours after the procedure, you may notice your eyes feel sore and gritty.
