There is a therapeutic technique I learned years ago.
Sometimes we view people as we saw them before or previously, and treat them how we viewed them before, not how they are now.
The technique teaches you to view the person as they are today, not the person they were 10 years ago or even 1 day ago or 1 minute ago.
What does this have to do with social media?
I used this technique on it.
I always found social media very toxic and it still kind of is.
I haven’t been on social media for very long and I was inactive for years.
I think I rejoined IG in 2014 but hardly went on it as I was building my career.
I joined LinkedIn in 2021 when I started the MBA, because they said I needed it. It’s actually one of my favourite social media apps along with TikTok.
The only reason I went on LinkedIn was for my MBA and I was super inactive.
I also went off of IG and TikTok for a bit when I completed my MBA.
In 2022 (I think it was 2022), I rejoined, and my entire view of social media changed.
I started to look at it in a positive way. It was so neat!
I started with TikTok.
I follow the coolest running and fitness community on TikTok. These are people basically running marathons and ultra marathons every day, well maybe not every day, but you get what I mean.
Then I went back on IG and joined Threads.
I wasn’t super active on Threads until I think 2023, it might have been 2024, but I can’t remember, and I am not scrolling through my history to figure it out.
I didn’t love IG at this time, but I saw something on Threads that intrigued me.
Someone said, “Algorithm find me.”
So, I asked the algorithm to find me:
Running
Fitness
Wellness
Yoga
Health
Mental Health
Positivity
There was more, but you get what I mean…
And the algorithm actually found me people who follow all of this.
Then I took that to IG and started following all these amazing people!
And now on IG and Threads, I see mostly people running marathons and ultra marathons every day, well maybe not every day, but you get what I mean.
And everyone is supporting everyone in this community!
Social media is so absolutely positive and motivating for me now.
I never thought this day would every happen as I always found social media so toxic. It still kind of is, but I try not to engage with that content much.
I try to promote a positive and real image on social media. I promote a healthy and fit lifestyle and I really want people to see that it is okay to have flaws and imperfections, and that real confidence does exist.
Let’s get back to the therapeutic technique. Sometimes we aren’t aware enough to step back and see things differently.
But one day, with lots of therapy (way to much therapy), you can view the world as it is right now.
And your whole view can change and become something so different, in a good, positive and healthy way.
I don’t know if I will always have this view of social media, but in my usual fashion, I thank universe for this very cool perspective!
