Miley Cyrus made huge internet announcements regarding her music in the last few days that surprised the fans. The pop diva announced the release of the full performance of The end of the World this Thursday-the song that she performed privately for Letterman at the Chateau Marmont last year. Calling on her ‘Smilers! YES that’s what she is referring to her fans now!’, she thanked her loyal supporters for acknowledging the track and making the decision to go ahead with its full availability. The reactions? Oh, they’ve been, like, everywhere!

First off, the whole ‘Smilers’ thing had some fans screaming. One user, @deapetz, straight-up cackled ‘ELA APELANDO PRA “SMILERS” KKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK’ (@deapetz’s translator: ‘HER RESORTING TO “SMILERS” LOLOLOL’). On the opposite direction, others like @ERENG0ALS got emotional for crying, ‘omg voltamos a ser smilers 😭’ (‘OMG we are Smilers again 😭’). No wonder, Miley’s blast-from-the-past nickname evoked nostalgia and confusion simultaneously.
Then of course there were demands for more. ‘@luiscvnnsnt did just not shy away from that,’ to say: ‘Girl we love you but we want a live performance of this bop 🙏.’ To which @saartorijr followed up pouring salt on the wound of ungratefulness, ‘Girl, for the love of God, record new performances! There’s no way you can do that to your smilers.’ Definitely about thanks with one side-eye on recycling.
The Spotify stans were also getting ready to go in on the performance, bluntly to @Style_1989TV, ‘We NEED it on Spotify’, to which @lisacyruz added, ‘lo quiero en spotify bestie.’ A viral thread followed, where @MileyLegend_ said, ‘En YouTube si pero en Spotify no se’ (‘On YouTube yes but on Spotify idk’). The streaming wars are really on.
Just as not all were lovey-dovey, other comments were not too nice; @pskbetuls11 was hurling some serious shade, saying, ”Doğru düzgün promo yap ya floplayacaksın’ (‘Do proper promo or you’ll flop’), with comic relief provided by @euinacionetto: ‘mulher, que trauma todo é esse que não pode ir num late night cantar a música?’ (‘girl, what’s this whole trauma that you can’t go on a late night show to sing the song?’). Ouch.
To some, though, Miley was all that mattered. Gushing, @Radiatelove__ said, ‘Te amo con cada parte de mí corazón, sos la persona qué más feliz me hace’ (‘I love you with every part of my heart, you’re the person who makes me happiest’). Contrast that with @medyasosyalii, who dropped an entire poetic novel in the replies comparing Miley to everlasting love and winter suns. Profound.

So yet again, what do we learn? Apparently giving the people what they semi-demanded. The internet is, however, swiftly fragmenting. Some love it; some want new work; others just want to get hung upon the word ‘smilers’. Regardless, an interesting performance drops this Thursday. Will this appease the multitude? Only time will tell. One thing, though, is for sure-Miley is making a good job of keeping them all talking. Well, at least she didn’t call it a visual album. Yet.
