When facing breast cancer, one of the biggest decisions a woman makes, often alongside her medical team, is whether to undergo a lumpectomy or a mastectomy. While both are life-saving surgeries, their impact on the body and the healing journey that follows can be quite different.
As a physical therapist specializing in post-breast cancer rehabilitation, I’ve seen how tailored, gentle therapy can help women recover their mobility, manage pain, and regain confidence, regardless of the path they choose.

ToggleWhat’s the Difference?
-
Lumpectomy is a breast-conserving surgery where only the tumor and a small margin of tissue are removed. It’s often followed by radiation therapy. -
Mastectomy involves removing the entire breast and may also include surrounding lymph nodes and muscle tissue. Some women also choose reconstruction.
Both surgeries can lead to similar complications like:
-
Scar tissue and adhesions -
Restricted shoulder or chest mobility -
Axillary tightness -
Swelling or risk of lymphedema -
Postural changes -
Fatigue and reduced functional capacity
However, the intensity and duration of recovery may differ depending on the surgery, type of reconstruction (if any), and whether lymph nodes were removed.
How Physical Therapy Helps, Regardless of the Surgery
Based on current research, physical therapy is a cornerstone for recovery and long-term wellness. Here’s how:
Gentle techniques that help move lymph fluid and prevent or manage swelling, especially after lymph node removal.
Simple stretches and guided movements that begin as soon as medically cleared, helping to restore shoulder and arm mobility, reduce pain, and prevent long-term stiffness.
Hands-on techniques to soften and mobilize scar tissue, reducing pulling, tightness, and discomfort that can limit movement.
Personalized programs to regain strength, posture, and balance, so you can return to your favorite activities and daily life with confidence.
No matter which surgery you’ve had, you deserve a personalized approach to healing. That’s why I offer post-operative therapy sessions focused on your body’s rhythm, using science-based techniques and a whole-person approach.
I’ve created a short video with gentle movements that are safe to begin once your surgeon clears you. These exercises are designed to:
-
Improve circulation -
Release tension in the chest and shoulders -
Support emotional healing through mindful movement
