Since 2020, viewers have been watching the Slaton sisters on 1000-lb Sisters on TLC. Tipping the scales at over 1,000 pounds combined, Amy Slaton-Halterman and Tammy Slaton attempt to lose enough weight to qualify for and undergo life-changing bariatric surgery, thereby pursuing their dreams. Chronicling their lives, both the ups and downs, highs and lows, the series has taken the world by storm.
As Tammy Slaton has given her followers the experience of witnessing her extreme weight loss journey, having lost 500 lbs after her bariatric surgery two years ago, many viewers remember some of her darker moments where it seemed as if Tammy might not ever get to this place. Thanks to poor choices and bad influences, viewers remember an unfortunate incident of drinking and partying alongside some toxic “friends.”
Tammy Had a Bad Showing on ‘1000-lb Sisters’
During the tenth episode of Season 3, titled “Moving on Up and Partying on Down,” the post-family vacation caused a major rift between the sisters. After Amy dropped the bomb that she had bought a house for herself, Michael Halterman, and baby Gage, Tammy took out her frustration in one of the worst possible ways. Following the family vacation, she had been partying with her friends Rob, Ralph, and JT, noting that they were drinking and vaping. In the episode, Tammy revealed in her confessional, “As a teenager I wasn’t doing any partying. I was super shy about my weight, and I really didn’t have too many friends. So, like, I just stayed in my little bubble. But now I’m to the point where, I don’t care. I’m gonna be me. Whether you like it, he likes it, she like it, we all don’t like it. I don’t care. I want to be me.” Family friend Rob understands the family’s concern for Tammy’s health, but his toxic trait is believing he’s there to help her relieve stress and have a good time. As the boys said, “We fly, Tammy buys.” Some friends these are!

The TLC series may be playing into certain unhealthy stereotypes.
After heading to the liquor store, the quartet head back to her home where they party it up. Even though Tammy aspires to go to a bar just to say that she has, she says “I can be Gucci here at the house.” As she scoffs down pizza, she continues to drink, hoping the grease will limit her hangover. When Amy calls, she ignores the call, as her friends mock her sister. The drinks continue to flow, and the inebriation continues. They even encourage her to double-fist the two cocktails, joking that she’s on “demon time.”
The next day, Amy and Michael bring Tammy to her new home, but Tammy doesn’t want to try to go inside. Why? She’s hurting. She’s hungover. While it may partially be an excuse, it’s also rooted in her frustration that her sister and best friend is leaving her. She doesn’t want to see her leave her. Amy is disappointed that Tammy is not supportive, but Tammy is adamant that it’s because she’s hungover. It’s a multi-tiered moment in her character arc. She’s clearly covering up her insecurities about being alone through a toxic situation.
Fans Were Not a Fan of the Toxic Friends
Even though Tammy is aware that this incident is doing damage to her body, it’s her stress release. She just wanted to have fun. But the fan reception was not as kind. Part of the premise is to watch Tammy improve herself, so actively watching her take a turn toward the darker side was hard to watch. But the worst part of the incident is having these “friends” inhibit her rather than motivate her to improve. With excuses galore, Tammy and her friends dismiss her reality. While some fans took to social media and Reddit to question the validity of the scene and who exactly they were, Rob has been a friend of the family, specifically Amanda Halterman. Could it have been a fabrication? Would these individuals truly allow Tammy to go through this?
With many fans calling on Tammy to get help at the time, especially after an incident when Tammy left food addiction rehab early, this scene was one of the most questionable moments for viewers. Thankfully, Tammy’s ultimate result has been positive. The Season 7 premiere celebrated Tammy’s triumphant transformation, so in the end, the toxic friends partying at home was just a blip in her journey. 1000-lb Sisters airs Tuesdays at 9:00pm on TLC. The series is available to stream on Max.
