This delicious Ham And Cheese Sandwich Recipe is pure comfort food perfection—some classics never go out of style.

Succulent ham and cheese sandwich with toasted bread, melted cheese, and sliced ham, perfect for a quick, healthy meal or snack. Made with fresh ingredients for a satisfying flavor.

Simple, savory, and satisfying are three words that perfectly describe my ham and cheese sandwich. It’s sort of a no-frills recipe, the kind that makes you realize that the best meals often feature a small ingredient list and easy prep. It all starts with the buttery, crispy sandwich bread—make sure it’s high-quality and thick enough to handle the tangy, sharp Dijon mustard, ooey-gooey cheese, and layers of ham. And just like that, you’ve created a sandwich that’ll rival your local deli.

My favorite part of the recipe is the whole-grain bread. Typically, when I’m whipping up a sandwich for lunch, I lean towards a white or sourdough bread. However, after enjoying the nutty flavor of whole-grain combined with the salty and savory deli ham, I don’t think I can ever go back!

Whether it’s for an office lunch or dinner when you can’t be bothered with a huge spread, a ham and cheese sandwich remains my go-to choice. Make one yourself, and you’ll know why.

How can I add more flavor to this recipe?

There are plenty of ways to level up the flavor. I love adding sliced cornichons, a squirt of Japanese mayonnaise (Kewpie is a good choice), and pickled pepperoncinis. Swap the Dijon for something sweeter, like honey mustard. Then, top it with pickled red onions. Or keep it classic with romaine lettuce, heirloom tomatoes, and cucumbers. The possibilities are endless with sandwiches, so let your culinary imagination run wild.

How do I store leftovers?

Any leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. To reheat it, you can either place it in a lightly oiled pan over medium heat until warmed through or pop it in the toaster oven for about 5 minutes at 350°F. You can also reheat it in the air-fryer at 325°F for about 3-4 minutes.

Serving suggestions

While this ham and cheese sandwich is delicious on its own, it’s even better when it’s served with a few side dishes. Pretend you’re a deli and add a Spring Salad or a cup of Potato-Leek Soup. When my nephews visit, I’ll usually serve the sandwich with Homemade Potato Chips and tangy Carolina Coleslaw. If you want to keep it simple, Baked French Fries are a big hit with kids and adults alike!

Ingredients

  • 4 teaspoons unsalted butter softened
  • 4 slices whole-grain sandwich bread
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard divided
  • 4 slices Swiss or cheddar cheese
  • 6 slices deli ham

Instructions

  • Spread 1 teaspoon of the softened butter on one side of each bread slice. On two of the slices, spread about 1/2 tablespoon of the Dijon mustard on the side opposite the butter.

  • Place two of the bread slices, butter-side down, onto a preheated nonstick skillet over medium heat. On each, lay one slice of cheese followed by three slices of ham, then another slice of cheese.

  • Top with the remaining bread slices, mustard side down. Cook for about 4 to 5 minutes until the bottom is golden brown, then flip and cook another 2 to 4 minutes until the cheese melts. Remove from the skillet and let rest for 2 minutes before slicing.
