George Tidmarsh named acting head of FDA’s CBER

George Tidmarsh, the Food and Drug Administration’s top drug regulator, will take on additional responsibilities on a temporary basis after the sudden departure of top official Vinay Prasad on Tuesday.

Tidmarsh has been named acting director of the FDA’s Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research, FDA Commissioner Marty Makary said in an email viewed by STAT. That’s one of the roles vacated by Prasad. Prasad was also the agency’s chief medical and scientific officer.

“The FDA was very fortunate to have Vinay’s expertise at CBER,” Makary wrote to CBER staff. “He implemented major reforms and designed new regulatory frameworks that will have an enduring impact.”
