Yesterday was my birthday.
Today is my youngest daughter’s.
Tomorrow is my eldest’s.
October always brings me reflection – about time, family, and health.
Maybe it’s the back-to-back birthdays, or maybe it’s simply middle age making me more aware of what truly matters.
I’ve noticed something over the years: my relationship with self-care has gone through stages.
It’s been a problem to solve, a weakness to overcome, a strength to protect, and, at its best, a superpower to live from.
And life feels completely different depending on which of those four I’m living from.
The Whirlwind We All Know
Even today, celebrating my daughter’s birthday, I caught myself juggling.
We went strawberry picking – sunshine, laughter, sticky fingers – and yet I was also checking emails, replying to messages, managing the flow of business decisions from my phone.
If I fully focus on family, I feel like I’m letting the team and our members down.
If I fully focus on business, I feel like I’m letting my family down.
And in the middle of it all… I forget about my own health.
It’s that invisible tug-of-war so many of us feel.
We tell ourselves we’ll get back to exercise, or eat better, or sleep more – once things calm down.
But life rarely calms down. The plates keep spinning.
The Turning Point
What I’ve realised is this:
When I treat self-care as something I have to fit around life, I always end up overwhelmed and exhausted.
But when I build life around self-care, everything steadies.
When I move my body, eat well, rest properly, and give myself space to breathe – I don’t just feel better.
I am better – as a dad, as a partner, as a leader, as a human.
And that’s the shift I want more people to make.
Because when self-care becomes your strength or even your superpower, it changes everything.
Energy comes back. Focus returns. Relationships deepen.
You start showing up for life instead of just surviving it.
A Simple Insight
Here’s the truth that keeps me grounded:
When self-care feels hard, it’s usually because you’re trying to fit it around life — not build life around it.
That one idea has reshaped how I live, and it’s at the heart of what we do at Best Body.
We’re not here to add another thing to your to-do list.
We’re here to help you build a life that supports your health – not competes with it.
If You’re in That Juggling Season
If you’ve been feeling pulled in a dozen directions — between work, family, and everyone else’s needs – I get it.
You’re not lazy. You’re not failing. You’re just juggling too much with an empty tank.
So here’s your reminder:
Start with one small act of self-care this week.
Move. Breathe. Stretch. Nourish yourself.
Because when you put your health back at the centre, life starts to find its rhythm again.
