Key takeaways:
- Lenz Therapeutics expects Vizz to be available later this year.
- The approval was based on the positive results from the three phase 3 CLARITY studies.
The FDA approved Vizz for the treatment of presbyopia in adults, according to a press release from Lenz Therapeutics.
Once-daily Vizz (aceclidine ophthalmic solution 1.44%) contracts the iris sphincter muscle, creating a pinhole effect to extend depth of focus and improve near vision without a myopic shift, according to the release.

“Vizz is a convenient, once-daily solution that improves consumers’ near visual experience, allowing them to stay in the moment,” Eef Schimmelpennink, president
and CEO of Lenz Therapeutics, told PCON in an email. “Vizz provides another option that offers individuals visual freedom for up to 10 hours to meet their often demanding, active lifestyle while reducing dependency on readers.”
The FDA approval is based on three phase 3 studies, CLARITY 1, CLARITY 2 and CLARITY 3. CLARITY 1 and CLARITY 2 evaluated the safety and efficacy of Vizz in 466 adults who underwent once-daily dosing for 42 days. Both trials achieved all primary and secondary near vision improvement endpoints, with near vision improvement seen within 30 minutes and lasting up to 10 hours. In CLARITY 3, the long-term safety of Vizz was evaluated in 217 adults for a 6-month period of once-daily dosing.
The eye drop was well tolerated in all three trials, and there were no serious treatment-related adverse events.
Lenz expects samples of Vizz to be available as early as October, with commercial availability later in the fourth quarter.
“Vizz allows eye care professionals to offer their patients a differentiated and transformative treatment option for presbyopia that can complement current offerings,” Schimmelpennink said. “Vizz works for a broad group of presbyopes, and we expect [to see] early adaptors especially in: contact lens wearers who enjoy and desire to stay glasses free, post-refractive surgery individuals who have invested in glasses-free vision and are looking for options to stay glasses free, and active lifestyle individuals who have a ‘look good, feel good’ mindset and preference for discreet near-vision correction.”
