DefEYE Inc., previously a subsidiary of Verséa Health operating as Verséa Ophthalmics, announced its launch as an independent company, according to a press release.
DefEYE launched with a portfolio of decellularized biologics, including Biovance 3L Ocular and Biovance amniotic decellularized basement membrane products, which are designed to help manage the ocular surface by protecting and preserving tissue.
“The optimization of the ocular surface is crucial to both managing patient symptoms and signs as well as to support consistent surgical outcomes,” Rob Sambursky, MD, CEO of DefEYE, told Healio. “Biovance 3L Ocular’s unique decellularized structure makes it not only helpful for challenging dry eye and neurotrophic keratitis in the clinical setting, but its strong tissue adherence, handleability, and lack of need for tissue glue or sutures also supports its advantages for ocular surgery applications.”
The company also has the commercial rights to additional decellularized human placenta-derived biologics “with strong potential applications in eye care,” the release said.
Robert Glashow will join DefEYE as chief financial officer, with Rahim Hirji, RPh, serving as senior vice president of marketing, Tyler Johnson as vice president of market development and Rebecca Chandler as vice president of strategic accounts.
As Healio previously reported, decellularized, dehydrated pure amniotic membrane basement membrane showed efficacy in healing corneal epithelial defects in combination with eyelid pressure patching.
