Assam Anti-Quackery Drive: 32 Fake doctors arrested

Guwahati: The Assam Council of Medical Registration’s Antiquackery & Vigilance Cell, functioning under the Directorate of Medical Education, has intensified its crackdown on fake doctors and unethical medical practices across the state. Since its formation in January 2025, the cell has arrested 32 fake doctors and issued summons to 14 doctors for unethical practices, as of December 27, 2025.

Medical Dialogues had previously reported that the Assam government has launched an intensified crackdown on quacks operating across the state. Within just three days, four individuals impersonating medical professionals have been arrested — two from Nagaon and two from Jorhat — as part of an ongoing operation by the newly formed anti-quackery task force.

Speaking to the Sentinel, Dr Abhijit Neog stated that they had initiated action against ‘quacks’ or fake doctors and unethical practices by doctors (including practising as specialists or without adequate qualifications, etc.).

According to the news reports, the Antiquackery & Vigilance Cell has so far lodged 54 First Information Reports (FIRs). Of these, 45 FIRs were registered against fake doctors at the CID Police Station in Guwahati. These cases have resulted in 32 arrests across different districts of Assam. While one accused managed to secure pre-arrest bail, another’s application for anticipatory bail was rejected by the Gauhati High Court.

Notably, the anticipatory bail application of a fake doctor of Silchar was rejected by the High Court on November 4, 2025; however, the Cachar Police are yet to arrest him.

The formation of the Antiquackery & Vigilance Cell traces back to a Public Interest Litigation (PIL No. 34/2023) filed by Dr Abhijit Neog in the Gauhati High Court. The PIL sought directions to the Health Department to conduct a statewide survey of quacks, verify their qualifications, establish a helpline, and form a dedicated anti-quackery unit.

The PIL sought to bring to the notice of the court the serious risk to the life and limb of the residents of the state being caused by a large number of fraudulent persons who are practising as doctors without the requisite and recognized qualifications and without being registered under the Assam Medical Council, the Indian Medical Registry, or the State and Central Register of NCISM (National Council of Indian System of Medicine) as required under Section 34 of the NCISM Act, 2020, reports the Sentinel.

Responding to these concerns, the Assam government constituted the Anti-Quackery & Vigilance Cell in January 2025 to monitor medical practices and take strict action against violators.
