At a FYC event in Los Angeles, PEOPLE reported that Brunson shared her thoughts on breaking up Gregory and Janine. “I think there’s nothing wrong with crushing [fans],” she said. “It doesn’t technically deter me.” But he also made it clear that she wasn’t looking to just break them up without thinking about it because she wasn’t going to “kill the dog” when it came to their romance. “I want everyone to have a good time here.”
While the show has found success recently with many fans praising Brunson for the characters and ships, she says that it “always is shocking” how engaged people get with the characters and their love stories. “It’s always what you want. It’s what you’re writing for and writing towards,” she said at the event. “I love that they love Janine and Gregory so much. I love that they love Ava and Shawn. These things are so rewarding. That’s what you want.” But she did go on, sharing her shock over the dedication to the characters. “It’s really kind of amazing how invested they get,” she said.
To Break Up or Not Break Up
Comedies typically find their couples and go with it. Parks and Recreation had both April (Aubrey Plaza) and Andy (Chris Pratt) as well as Ben (Adam Scott) and Leslie (Amy Poehler). Shows like The Office famously had Jim (John Krasinski) and Pam (Jenna Fischer). But even Jim and Pam struggled, the two going through a rough patch in the end of the run with Pam relying on a camera operator to help her. They didn’t break-up but it allowed for drama. With Ben and Leslie, their “break-up” was not their choice and it allowed them to be happy through the rest of the show. We don’t know what will happen with Janine and Gregory but I trust Brunson.
You can see Janine and Gregory on Abbott Elementary.
