Story:

Paramanandam, a respected figure in his village, dies suddenly under mysterious circumstances. His elder son, Swamy (Sunil Reddy), notices something unusual about the death. Plus Points:

The first thing worth highlighting is the spot-on casting. Real-life brothers Vaibhav and Sunil Reddy play onscreen siblings, and their natural chemistry adds authenticity and depth to the film.

Vaibhav is convincing as the carefree, boozing younger son, while Sunil Reddy shines in the role of the elder son who is deeply concerned about his reputation. Both deliver solid performances that ground the film.

Supporting actors like Niharika NM, Chandini Tamilarasan, Bala Saravanan, Munishkanth, and Redin Kingsley bring in good laughs through their expressions and dialogue delivery. Their commitment to this kind of offbeat story deserves credit.

Being an adult comedy, Perusu leans heavily on situational humour – and it works. What’s impressive is how no one laughs onscreen, yet the absurdity of their situations makes the audience laugh. That subtle, awkward style of comedy hits the mark.

The film also captures the nosy behaviour of neighbors and the family’s chaotic attempts to hide the truth about the father’s death in a way that feels very real and relatable.

Minus Points:

While Perusu succeeds in its genre, it does come with inherent limitations. As a black comedy, it’s not for everyone. The tone may not resonate with viewers who prefer more traditional humour.

The director clearly understands the niche appeal of the story, but the pacing suffers. The plot is thin, and stretching it to nearly two hours makes certain portions feel dragged out.

Characters like Redin Kingsley, VTV Ganesh, and Bala Saravanan could have been used better. With stronger scenes or more improvisation, they could’ve added more to the comedy.

Also, since this is very much an adult-themed film, it’s not family-friendly, and younger or conservative viewers might find it off-putting.

Technical Aspects:

Writer-director Ilango Ram delivers a bold attempt with a unique tone, but the screenplay could have been tighter. Sharper writing and more impactful dark comedy moments would have added punch.

Sathya Thilakam’s cinematography is clean and consistent, while Arun Raj’s music is okay, though a few scenes could have used a stronger score. Editing by Sooriya Kumaraguru feels a bit loose – trimming the runtime could have improved the overall experience. Production values are decent, and the Telugu dubbing is serviceable.

Verdict:

On the whole, Perusu is a quirky adult comedy that works best for fans of dark, situational humor. The cast, especially Vaibhav and Sunil Reddy, do a fine job, and the film has its moments. However, its niche theme, slow pace, and limited appeal make it more suited to a specific audience. It’s best watched alone – definitely not one for the whole family. If you enjoy films that blend awkward situations with black comedy, Perusu might just hit the spot. Otherwise, go in with tempered expectations.
