Warner Bros.‘ remake of The Bodyguard has found its director.
Sam Wrench, who directed the 2023 concert feature Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour, is attached to a new version of the original 1992 drama film that starred Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner. No casting announcements have been made.
Jonathan Abrams, who penned last year’s Clint Eastwood-helmed Juror #2 for the studio, is writing the script. Matthew Lopez wrote a previous version of the screenplay for the long-gestating remake that has been in various stages of development since 2011.
The Bodyguard centers on a former Secret Service agent (Costner) who is hired to protect a celebrity (Houston) from a stalker. Marking Houston’s feature acting debut, the movie was a big hit and became 1992’s second-highest-grossing title at the worldwide box office. The Bodyguard landed two Oscar nominations and featured Houston’s cover of Dolly Parton’s “I Will Always Love You,” which achieved global success and became a signature, Grammy-winning song for the late pop star.
Mick Jackson helmed the 1992 feature from a script by Lawrence Kasdan. A stage adaptation of The Bodyguard opened in London’s West End in 2012.
Wrench’s previous credits include A Nonsense Christmas with Sabrina Carpenter, which hit Netflix during last year’s holiday season.
In his review of The Bodyguard for The Hollywood Reporter, critic Duane Byrge wrote that the film “suffers some discordant tonal lapses.” Byrge also noted that the feature “is plugged with zingy moments and charged by several scrumptiously mounted Houston performances.”
Deadline was first to report on the involvement of Wrench and Abrams.
