“The Waterfront,” from writer and executive producer Kevin Williamson (“Dawson’s Creek,” the “Scream” movies), is described on IMDb as being about the “damaged” and dysfunctional Buckley family as “their storied North Carolina fishing empire decays (and they) grapple to revive their imperiled maritime heritage.”
The show is said to be inspired by “true events,” according to Netflix. It is not yet known whether a second season of the show will shoot in the Wilmington area.
“This is about a working man who’s trying to make a go of it for his family,” Williamson told Tudum. “They’ve pulled themselves up from nothing and they’ve built this mini fishing empire in their small little town. Now it’s being taken away from them bit by bit. They’ll do anything to hold onto it, because it represents their family.”
“The Waterfront” stars Holt McCallany (“Mindhunter,” “The Iron Claw”) as hard-drinking family patriarch Harlan Buckley; Maria Bello (“A History of Violence”) as his wife, Belle, who’s running the family business; and Jake Weary as their son, Cane, and Melissa Benoist (“Supergirl”) as their daughter, Bree, both of whom have complicated relationships with their parents.
Topher Grace (“That ’70s Show,” “Spider-Man 3”) is credited with a guest starring role.
Area locations include Fishy Fishy Cafe, Morningstar Marina and Potter’s Seafood in Southport, and the Cape Fear Club (on Chestnut Street), Cherry Avenue (off Wrightsville Avenue) and the Cotton Exchange shopping center in Wilmington.
The series will be set in fictional “Havenport, North Carolina,” according to Tudum.
Williamson, who’s from New Bern, has a long history of shooting projects in Southeastern North Carolina.
His horror movie “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” which he wrote the screenplay for, shot in Southport in 1996. Then, teen drama “Dawson’s Creek,” which Williamson created and wrote, shot in the Wilmington area from 1998-2003.
Williamson is also known for creating the “Scream” horror movie franchise, and he’s credited as a writer and executive producer of the fifth “Scream” movie, which shot in the Wilmington area in 2021 and hit No. 1 at the box office.
Williamson served as a producer of Wilmington-shot horror film “The Exorcism” starring Russell Crowe, which was released in 2024.
