Tom Cruise has only positive things to say about his ex-wife Nicole Kidman! At least when it comes to discussing her craft!
In a new interview with Sight and Sound magazine on Friday, the 62-year-old actor opened up about working on the 1999 film Eyes Wide Shut with Nicole and director Stanley Kubrick — and praised her skills! This is a big deal! The guy rarely talks about his former flame! The comment about Nicole came when he recalled how he met with the filmmaker before shooting started and suggested they should cast her:
“I flew out to his house, and I landed in his backyard. I read the script the day before and we spent the day talking about it. I knew all of his films. Then it was basically he and I getting to know each other. And when we were doing that, I suggested Nicole play the role [of Alice]. Because, obviously, she’s a great actress.”
A glowing review from Tom! LOLz! He then remembered telling Kubrick:
“Whatever it’s going to take [to make the movie], we’re going to do this.”
And they did it! In the movie, Tom plays Dr. Bill Harford, while Nicole stars as his on-screen wife, Alice Harford. They also were married IRL during the production process. The two tied the knot in 1990 and divorced in 2001 — two years after Eyes Wide Shut premiered. In 2020, Nicole told the New York Times that they were “happily married” while shooting the film. However, the Baby Girl star later revealed the director pulled inspiration from her and Tom’s relationship to determine how their characters interacted with each other. Given the toxic dynamic in the film, what does that actually say about their marriage? Oof!
Well, you won’t find the answer from Tom! He didn’t talk about their romance or more about Nicole from there! He continued to tell the magazine instead:
“I thought the film was very interesting, and I wanted to have that experience. When I go to make a movie, I do a lot of detailed investigation and a lot of time with the people before I commit so that I understand what they need and want and they understand me and how we can work together and really create something very special.”
