Acclaimed horror filmmaker Osgood Perkins continues to give audiences something completely different from what he’s done before with the arrival of the debut teaser for Keeper. However, it’s not perhaps the teaser some may be expecting, as, in perfect Osgood Perkins fashion, Keeper is already kicking off a very unusual marketing campaign. A new livestream posted by Neon sees Tatiana Maslany (She-Hulk: Attorney at Law) staring at the camera and writing something in a seemingly endless loop, giving viewers an ominous taste of what’s to come in the mysterious new project.
The film, which is due out later this year, is the latest in the filmmaker’s string of horror projects, and looks to deliver something from a completely different subgenre than what we saw in The Monkey and Longlegs. Starring Tatiana Maslany and Rossif Sutherland (Orphan: First Kill), the movie follows a couple who travel to a remote cabin in the woods. Once there, Sutherland’s character is called back to the city, leaving his partner alone where she’ll be forced to face a sinister entity lurking within the walls of the home. Although it sounds like your run-of-the-mill haunted house story, there’s much more that lurks within the storyline and themes of Keeper than what initially meets the eye.
Previously speaking to Perri Nemiroff for an installment of Collider’s Ladies Night, Maslany teased the upcoming horror movie, revealing that Keeper would be “in its own little world,” adding,
“That’s what’s great about Oz is that it doesn’t sit anywhere in either of those places. I’m so excited about it. It was so exciting to watch that preview with an audience. To see it up on the screen. I’m very excited for people to see it.”
Osgood Perkins’ Year of Success
Though he previously helmed The Blackcoat’s Daughter, I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House, and Gretel & Hansel, it was with 2024’s Longlegs that rocketed Perkins towards global recognition. The Nicolas Cage and Maika Monroe-led feature mixed horror with a crime thriller edge that led many to compare it to The Silence of the Lambs. Mix that with a bloody good marketing campaign, and it’s easy to understand why Longlegs became not just a financial success, but one of the most talked-about titles of last summer.
Following Longlegs up was no small task, but Perkins made it look easy when he released The Monkey earlier this year. Adapted from the Stephen King short story, the film puts Theo James in the leading roles as a set of twin brothers whose lives have been uprooted since childhood thanks to a killer monkey toy. Once again, fans and critics responded positively to Perkins’ work, further solidifying him as one of the modern genre’s finest.
