Singer Sonu Nigam has landed in controversy after a pro-Kannada group, Karnataka Rakshana Vedike (KRV) filed a police complaint against him.
Complaint claims that Sonu comments during a concert in Bengaluru hurt the sentiments of the Kannada speaking community.
The incident occurred at East Point College where a video went viral showing Sonu recounting an incident where a fan insisted he sing a Kannada song. He compared the pressure to a terrorist act referencing the recent Pahalgam attack that killed 26 people.
Though Sonu clarified that he deeply respects the Kannada language and its people, his remarks linking a song request to terrorism caused outrage. KRV stated that his words portrayed Kannadigas in a negative light which they believe is unfair and offensive.
Currently, there’s no legal action apart from the complaint, but demands for an apology are growing. The controversy has added to the tension surrounding linguistic sensitivity.
