The first figure from Sideshow Collectibles and Hot Toys is the ⅙ scale Scarecrow 2.0. This features Murphy’s Dr. Jonathan Crane in his signature scary mask and standard gray suit he’s seen wearing at his job at Arkham Asylum. The piece has a new Murphy head sculpt and two different burlap sack masked heads. The figure also comes with a scream-worthy number of accessories, which include fear toxin sprayers, an openable suitcase, a lighter, a flashlight, smoke effect accessories, and a city sewer diorama base. As for the McFarlane Toys figure, it has the character in his same gray suit and Scarecrow mask. The seven-inch-scale Red Platinum Label piece is a part of McFarlane’s DC Multiverse line and comes with two interchangeable hands, a character art card, and a base. This is the third time the company has made a Murphy Scarecrow figure. The first debuted in the original McFarlane Dark Knight trilogy, Bane Build-A-Figure wave. There the villain was seen in his Arkham prison garb. They would later release a “Jokerized” version of that same figure.
“There’s Nothing to Fear, but Fear Itself!”
While Scarecrow wasn’t the main villain of Batman Begins, this mad doctor helped set the groundwork for the rest of the risk-taking trilogy. The big theme of the first film was Bruce Wayne overcoming his fear of bats and the dread that spawned from his parents’ death. Scarecrow was the physical manifestation of that. Batman being gassed with fear toxin is one of the scarier moments that came out of this mature coming-of-age story. The images of Batman on fire were striking to say the least. Scarecrow added horror elements that gave Batman Begins a unique feel and Murphy’s performance was simply bone-chilling. The actor was arguably more frightening without his mask on. Murphy would go on to reprise his villainous role in both The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises with small cameos.
