ORLANDO — Haag-Streit has launched its Metis 3D Digital Heads-Up Module, according to a company press release.

The module (Metis HU) expands on the company’s Metis 900 ophthalmic microscope by incorporating a 3D 4K camera and 55-inch monitor and replacing a traditional eyepiece with a heads-up view. The launch was announced at the American Academy of Ophthalmology meeting in Orlando, Florida.

The Metis HU is designed to improve ergonomics for surgeons.

Mike Luley, director of global strategy and business development at Haag-Streit, told Healio that that the Metis HU remains stable throughout procedures. The module provides better visualization through a high-resolution display, as well as a dynamic camera that constantly adapts to lighting conditions. Luley said surgeons can adjust the brightness of the display, as it is separate from the actual camera.

Additionally, Luley said the module was designed with a focus to provide better ergonomics for surgeons. It does this by allowing them to sit in an upright position and have clear visualization without excessive head movements, according to the release. The Metis HU module also allows for more automation throughout the surgical process, Luley said.

“For MIGS surgery, the microscope position can be programmed prior to the procedure, saving time,” he said.

The company also reported on the progress of some of its other devices, including the Elara 900 digital slit lamp, which was released in September and allows physicians to better see the finer structures of the eye. Haag-Streit’s Octopus 650, a virtual reality perimetry headset, is slated for release in July 2026.
