Law & Order has reached its landmark Season 25 after the most recent round of renewals from NBC. The flagship Dick Wolf police procedural was renewed alongside spin-off Law & Order: Special Victims Unit for their Season 27. Law and Order originally ran from 1990 to 2010 and was picked up again in 2022 for a 21st season. When the series was revived, it was also renewed for three seasons, bringing us to its landmark 25th season.
Two original cast members returned: Sam Waterston as District Attorney Jack McCoy and Anthony Anderson as Detective Kevin Bernard, along with a slew of new characters. Hugh Dancy (Ella Enchanted) as ADA Nolan Price, Camryn Manheim as Lieutenant Kate Dixon and Odelya Halevi as ADA Samantha Maroun were all announced. In the years since, Waterston departed, with the series bringing in Scandal‘s Tony Goldwyn as District Attorney Nicholas Baxter. After the departure of Manheim, Maura Tierny was also brought in to lead the 2-7 as Lieutenant Jessica Brady. Mehcad Brooks as Detective Jalen Shaw and Reid Scott as Detective Vincent Riley have also been a part of the cast since its revival.
It’s Not Just Renewal Season, But Crossover Season For ‘Law & Order’
The news comes after the crossover between Law & Order and its long-running spin-off SVU. The logline for the two-parter: “Play With Fire” Parts 1 & 2 features “a mysterious phone call to Capt. Benson of the Special Victims Unit that leads detectives to the scene of a brutal murder.”
The two-parter aired on Thursday, April 17, the same night as the Season 5 premiere of the other Law & Order spin-off, Law & Order: Organized Crime. The Triple Crown of Law & Order programming didn’t technically contain a triple crossover, but fans were able to tune into three straight hours of Law & Order programming. Organized Crime‘s Season 5 premiere also aired on NBC after both Law & Order and SVU, temporarily moving Found for the night. Law & Order‘s ratings have been strong this season, oftentimes pulling ahead of SVU. Fans cite the personal moments (usually crafted by writer and executive producer Rick Eid) intermixed into the narrative that keeps fans coming back week after week.
Law & Order airs Thursdays on NBC. You can watch past episodes on Peacock. Stay with Collider for the latest updates.
