MAGA loyalists are not happy with the Pulitzer Prize judges.
Donald Trump supporters were outraged after the photo from his near assassination in July 2024 was not awarded with the prestigious honor despite its historical significance.

In the picture taken by Associated Press photographer Evan Vucci at the July 13, 2024, rally in Butler, Penn., Donald Trump can be seen after narrowly being struck by an assassin’s bullet with his fist raised in the air and blood dripping down his face.
People were outraged by the oversight by the Pulitzer Prize judges. “Evan Vucci’s photograph of Donald Trump after last summer’s assassination attempt is iconic — maybe the single most famous photo of the past decade,” right wing influencer Charlie Kirk said on X. “But because it made Trump look good, the Pulitzer Prize committee just refused to give it the award for best breaking news photograph of 2024.”
“So telling and tragic,” Republican senator from Utah Mike Lee wrote of the snub.
According to an Axios report, one editor at a large news organization feared honoring the pictures by Evan Vucci with the award would “further” Donald Trump supporters and their “agenda.”
The anonymous writer claimed it would be “dangerous for media organizations to keep sharing” the picture “despite how good” it is.
The Pulitzer for Breaking News Photography was given to New York Times photographer Doug Mills for the pictures he took at the same ill-fated event. Specifically, for the shot of the bullet flying through the air before it grazed Donald Trump’s ear in front of the crowds of people.
“I just happened to be down, shooting with a wide-angle lens just below the president when he was speaking. There was a huge flag waving right above his head, and I just happened to be taking pictures at the same time,” the photographer explained to Fox News in July 2024. “Then, when I heard the pops, I guess I kept hitting on the shutter and then I saw him reach for his [ear]. He grimaced and grabbed his hand and looked. It was blood and then he went down and I thought, ‘Dear God, he’s been shot.'”
During Donald Trump’s inauguration speech in January 2025, he touched upon the moment his life was nearly taken from him.
“They’ve tried to take my freedom and take my life just a few months ago in a beautiful Pennsylvania field. An assassin’s bullet ripped through my ear,” the businessman said. “What I felt then and even more now, my life was saved for a reason. I was saved by God to make America great again.”
