Dan Scavino Jr., the Deputy Chief of Staff in the White House for Donald J. Trump, gave Mother’s Day weekend an easy-going yet warm start, hence putting his otherwise grateful, joking, and bizarrely political followers in the mood of the day. It was just a short line of three words: “Happy Mother’s Day,” with the emoji two-step (💐🌺). Sometimes, simplicity works.

The reply stream began equally fast, ranging from lovey-dovey shout-outs to mothers to weirdly meandering conspiracies. While Anna A. Baker stuck to being nice: “Thanks, Dan! Happy Mother’s Day to all of the wonderful mothers in your life. 😊” Pure nice-girl energy. Meanwhile, Adrian Holmes went into nostalgia, tagging Collective Soul and Mother’s Love: “Everyone might like this Mother’s day song 🎵.” Uh, random, but strangely sweet?
But not everyone kept to the script. Full-on Pacific Islander tangent. Ranting about the Air Force One retrofit costs as if it were a congressional hearing. “What’s wrong with the current Air Force One and then if this new one from Qatar will only be in service for the balance of this term—how do you DOGExplain the wild expense?” Sir, this is a Mother’s Day thread.
Jeanne Clermont went full mystery with “Blessings 🔔 are ruining” plus a link to…something. Vibes? Unclear. Energy? Chaotic.
Some international love had to show up. Nelly Lizama Saldaña said from Chile: “We thank the greeting to Chilean mothers! That President Trump looks a little at Chile we need help!” A heartfelt plea wrapped up in a holiday wish-multitasking at its best.
And the trolls sneered, “Happy Mothers Day to all. Thanks mum for not swallowing. To all the MAGA mothers, you should have 🤣.” Brutal. Unnecessary. But hey, this is the internet.
In the middle of the craziness, some comments cut through with utter sincerity. Tamie Vessecchia, in all capital letters, said, “THANK YOU DAN🙏 and to ALL THE LADIES IN YOUR LIFE HAPPY GLORIOUS🌸MOTHERS DAY🌺,” basically, gave you a virtual hug. Then there was Barbara McManus standing there all simple, “Thank you Dan. That’s very sweet!😉”
Never was this loud mess of commentary indulged in by Scavino himself, despite his well-known, proud Trump-era social media fervor. Incidentally, that chaotic blend of heart-warming, peculiar, and crazy tangents in the said comments only further reaffirmed that even the most uninspired holiday tweet in the world can be lifted to represent a miniature microcosm of the wonderfully ugly mess that is the internet.

The final takeaway? Moms got love, and, well, conspiracy theorists got airtime; and then there was a surprise promo for Collective Soul. Another typical day online.
