FDA names Richard Pazdur its top drug regulator

WASHINGTON — The Food and Drug Administration named Richard Pazdur, its longtime overseer of cancer therapies, as top drug regulator on Tuesday.

Pazdur replaces former Center for Drug Evaluation and Research Director George Tidmarsh, who exited the agency earlier this month amid accusations of using his regulatory authority to advance a personal vendetta against a former business associate, and amid infighting with vaccine and biologics center director Vinay Prasad.

“Dr. Pazdur is a true regulatory innovator who will help guide our broader agenda to modernize the agency and streamline the approval process,” said FDA Commissioner Marty Makary in a statement. “He has a track record of success and is an impressive forward-thinking scientist.”
